Clinical Psychologist Dr. GeriLynn Utter says now, more than ever, parents need to communicate in the correct manner with their teens and pre-teens. Pre Teens and Teens are trying to navigate the world. Do you remember what it was like at their age?
Discover how to talk to them like people, have a conversation that is reciprocal, try to listen, rather than jumping right into parent mode.We want our kids to feel safe enough to reach out to us for help, even if they really screwed up. As parents, it's our job to nurture them and help them navigate the world, not to navigate it for them. Let them know you are always there to help guide them, without judgment!
Geri Lynn Utter, PsyD. is a Clinical Psychologist who specializes in working with individuals
diagnosed with both substance use disorders and severe mental illness. Dr. Utter is passionate
about working with individuals and families who have been impacted by drug and alcohol
addiction as both her mother and father have struggled with addiction throughout their lives. In
April of 2020, she released her first book, Mainlining Philly: Survival, Hope and Resisting Drug
Addiction which came from her desire to share her story and instill hope. The book is based
largely on experiences and challenges that she faced in life due to her parents’ struggles with
drugs and alcohol abuse and also encompasses a short Addiction Handbook designed to offer
psycho-education about addiction and mental illness. In an effort to overcome the stigma
associated with addiction and other mental health issues, Dr. Utter continues to provide
education and spread awareness.
